1000 Karat Blau, designed by Axel Schmid in 2009 and refined in 2016, is the grand, sculptural member of the 24 Karat Blau family. Up to twenty acrylic shades with gold leaf cast inside hang in overlapping layers from slender red rods, turning a pendant into a glowing light object.
The gold leaf reflects the warm, long-wave part of the light back and forth between the shades for an especially cosy atmosphere, while only the short-wave blue light passes through the gold, so the light source itself appears bluish. The single luminaire carries 20 shades; an 18-shade version is made for joining several pieces into large clusters.
